Feel like your emotions are running the show?

When emotions hit hard, it’s easy to spiral into shame, regret, or reaction. You might lash out, shut down, or do something impulsive only to feel worse afterward. Maybe you’ve been told you’re “too sensitive,” or you’re constantly exhausted by your own emotional rollercoaster. You’re not broken. You just haven’t learned the tools yet.

At ReFresh Psychotherapy, we offer a structured, flexible DBT Skills Program that helps you build emotional resilience and get unstuck from patterns that aren’t serving you.

DBT Skills Program In Toronto

What Is The DBT Skills Program?

Traditional DBT programs often require a 40-week commitment and can cost over $6,000. At ReFresh Psychotherapy, we’ve created a more flexible and accessible approach.

Our DBT Skills Program is divided into three focused modules, each running 6 to 8 weeks. You can start with just one or complete all three at your own pace. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional outbursts, or impulsive behaviours, this program offers structured, evidence-based tools to help you respond to emotions with intention, not impulse.

Led by Katie Helfand, Registered Psychotherapist, the DBT Skills Program at ReFresh Psychotherapy in Toronto equips you with the tools to:

Learn how to manage intense emotions without spiralling, shutting down, or saying things you regret.
Use practical DBT tools to break free from emotional burnout and feel steadier, even on hard days.
Get the words and the confidence to ask for what you need, say no without guilt, and stop people-pleasing.
Stop the push-pull dynamics that leave you feeling misunderstood or emotionally drained.
Interrupt impulsive behaviours like self-harm, bingeing, emotional outbursts, or shutdowns with real tools that work in the moment.
Understand what you’re feeling, why you’re feeling it, and how to respond with intention, not just reaction.
Let go of shame, self-doubt, and the belief that you’re “too much.” Start showing up for yourself with clarity and compassion.
Get through tough moments without making things worse and learn how to bounce back faster when things do go sideways.
Clarify your values, identify your goals, and start living in a way that feels more aligned with the life you actually want.
Whether you’re dealing with BPD, PTSD, ADHD, eating issues, or just feel stuck in emotional chaos, this DBT skills program in Toronto gives you structure, support, and skills to help you finally feel better.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Our DBT Skills Program

Most DBT programs require long-term commitment and high upfront costs. Our approach allows you to start with one module at a time. Each module is focused, affordable, and gives you skills you can use right away.

Not at all. You can take one module or complete all three over time. It’s entirely up to you. We’ll help you choose the best place to start based on your goals.

DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) is a structured, skills-based approach that helps people manage overwhelming emotions, navigate relationships, tolerate distress, and stay grounded through mindfulness. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which focuses on exploring the “why,” DBT focuses on the “how”, giving you practical tools to cope, communicate, and respond with intention in real-life situations.

Not at all. While DBT was originally created for BPD, it’s now widely used to support people dealing with anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, emotional reactivity, disordered eating, and relationship issues. If your emotions tend to take over or you find yourself stuck in patterns you want to change, DBT could be a great fit. No specific diagnosis required.

Our DBT Skills Program teaches four core areas:

  • Emotion Regulation – Understand and manage intense feelings
  • Distress Tolerance – Get through crisis moments without making things worse
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness – Communicate clearly, set boundaries, and get your needs met
  • Mindfulness – Stay present and grounded instead of spinning out

These skills are practical, teachable, and designed to help you feel more in control of your life.

Each module runs for 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the focus. You can start with the module that feels most relevant and choose to continue with others (like Distress Tolerance or Interpersonal Effectiveness) if it makes sense for you. You’re never locked in, and we’ll help you decide what fits your goals.
No. This program focuses on building skills in the here and now. While your personal experiences matter, you won’t be expected to share your trauma history. The goal is to help you feel more equipped to manage what’s happening in your life today.
Yes! Many clients do. This program is a great complement to individual therapy, offering hands-on strategies you can use between sessions. We’re also happy to collaborate with your current therapist if that’s helpful for you.
