A little bit of stress is ok. A little bit of anxiety is ok. They are the signals from your body and mind, designed to warn you about risks, and protect you from danger. But when they start to impact your day-to-day life negatively, it can make you feel like you’re always waiting for the next crisis to happen – like you’re waiting for the next shoe to drop.
If you are experiencing:
Anxiety and stress are common human experiences, but for some, they become an overwhelming and persistent challenge as they start to disrupt daily life.
What’s the difference between stress and anxiety? Stress is generally triggered by a specific situation, such as a work or family issue, and once that situation is resolved, it’s often more manageable. Chronic stress can lead to anxiety, which is a more persistent level of stress that keeps your nervous system on high alert for long periods of time.
Anxiety can stem from a variety of sources, including genetic predisposition, brain chemistry imbalances, and life circumstances.
Understanding anxiety means recognizing that it’s not a choice or a sign of weakness. It’s a complex mental health condition that millions of people grapple with. Together, we can develop an informed and compassionate understanding of how stress and anxiety affect you.
Here are a few of the most common anxiety and stress disorders:
People with GAD suffer with excessive and persistent anxiety about a wide range of everyday situations and events. Physical symptoms like restlessness, muscle tension, and irritability can develop in response to your body being in a persistent state of “flight or fight”.
Adjustment disorder can develop in response to a significant life stressor, such as a divorce, job loss, or the death of a loved one. The emotional and mental impact of transitions can result in heightened anxiety and stress.
How quickly and completely someone manages anxiety will vary between people, but it is possible to improve with the right support and strategies. Many people find relief through therapy, self-care practices like mindfulness and exercise, and by identifying and addressing the underlying causes of their anxiety. While it may not completely disappear, it can become more manageable, allowing you to feel more in control of your day-to-day life.
Learning to manage and reduce panic attacks involves understanding your triggers, which can vary from person to person. Techniques like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and grounding exercises can be incredibly helpful during an attack. We will work together to help you find the strategies that work best for you.
Anxiety might not completely “go away,” but it can be managed and reduced with the right tools and support. We will work to understand your anxiety and its underlying causes, help you incorporate self-care practices, make lifestyle changes, and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
Medication can be one option for managing anxiety, but it’s not the only one. Lots of people find that lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep, can make a significant difference. In therapy, we will develop a plan that works for you. If it becomes clear that medication would be beneficial for your healing, we will work together to help widen your circle of care for additional support.
While there may not be a complete “cure” for anxiety, many people experience significant improvement and can lead fulfilling lives with proper management and support. The goal is often to reduce the impact of anxiety on your daily life, allowing you to function at your best and enjoy a high quality of life.
Coming to therapy is a courageous first step in getting the support you need to manage stress and anxiety. Every person and situation is different.
