FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people come to therapy because they are looking for meaningful change in their life. They are experiencing emotional pain, feeling stuck, or repeating unhealthy patterns. There are lots of reasons people come to therapy, but you can generally expect that it will take a bit of time for your therapist to get to know you and understand what the best treatment approach will be. This treatment should be uniquely tailored to you and your needs. Sometimes there are tips and tricks that can help, and sometimes the work is in learning how to feel difficult emotions and becoming more self-aware to facilitate healing. The hard work actually happens between sessions when you begin to make the small changes that help you feel better. But the process of therapy is a two-way street–be honest with your therapist and yourself, and you will begin to see change.

We require a minimum of 24 hours’ notice to cancel a therapy session. If you cancel before the 24 hours, there is no charge, but if you cancel within 24 hours, then the full session fee applies. The time you book is specifically reserved for you. This time is how we get paid and how we pay our bills. When a client cancels close to the appointment, it makes it almost impossible to fill the spot even though there is a waiting list.

The first session is an opportunity for you and your therapist to start getting to know each other. The therapist should review consent, confidentiality, and the cancellation policy with you. They will want to know what brings you to therapy, what your goals are, and what issues are the most pressing for you. They may also ask about your experience with therapy before–was it good or bad? What did or didn’t work for you? You also have the opportunity to ask any questions you have about the process or anything else. The therapist may also start to ask you about your history if there is time to get into this.

We do not offer direct billing but all our therapists are licensed and you will get a receipt that has all the required information to submit to your insurance directly for reimbursement. Most plans cover Psychotherapy or Psychological services but we recommend that you check with your insurance provider to confirm that you do have coverage.
The answer to this is different for everyone. It is dependent on a number of factors such as the frequency of sessions, what your challenges are, what your goals are, and your commitment to the work of therapy. We generally recommend beginning with weekly sessions so that you and your therapist can get to know one another and so that there is consistency and momentum in the process, then the frequency of sessions can be discussed to determine what is best. Therapy is an investment in yourself and your wellbeing and the payoff can be a healthier and happier version of yourself.
Finding the right fit with a therapist is the biggest determinant of a successful outcome, so it is really important. That is why we offer a free consultation. The consultation is your opportunity to get a first impression and to ask questions. Maybe you want to ask what forms of therapy they work with, when they are available, and how frequent your sessions should be. You can also tell them what has or hasn’t worked for you in the past with other therapists if you are not new to therapy. Do you want a therapist who is direct? Someone who will challenge you? Make a list in advance of all the questions you want to ask. Ultimately you want to work with someone who makes you and the process feel comfortable, who is non-judgmental and unbiased, and who allows you to feel that you are in a safe space to share openly in order to facilitate healing and change.

We are proud to offer some therapy sessions on a sliding scale. Availability is dependent on our team’s capacity. If you are interested in seeking therapy services on a sliding scale, please contact us.
